Peace and Democracy Facilitation

Discussing members of the local peace group that emerged in the course of the GEZA project in Northern Uganda

Wars and armed conflicts amplify poverty and complicate sustainable peace processes. Hence, peace and security next to democracy are basic requirements for the alleviation of poverty as well as for the attainment of the UN Millenium Development Goals and further for a sustainable social and economic development.

For this reason, the facilitation of peace and democracy is of heavy importance particularly in post conflict situations.

Peace facilitation in the sense of effective prevention of armed conflicts, the simultaneous initiation of peace building and peace consolidation as well as the setup and cutback of governmental and local structures therefore constitutes an important challenge for development cooperation.

Moreover, the facilitation of peace is aimed at the initiation, strengthening and consolidation of democratization processes. In doing so, the implementation of democratic principles is put forward. The basic principles of Good Governance plus the guarantee of women's and human rights, the rule of law and gender equality are counted among them.

In line with its projects in Northern Uganda and Mozambique, GEZA contributes to the facilitation and consolidation of peace and democracy in post conflict societies.
